Professor Suresh Chandra Sharma the chief of AIIMS Delhi ENT, head – neck surgery department, was appointed the first chairman of NMC. His appointment period is of 3 years or till the age of 70. President Ram Nath Kovind has dissolved the Medical Council of India in 2018 and a Board of Governors( BOG ) was established to perform its functions for a period till the National Medical Council is established.
Almost 72 applications for NMC were received by the central Government. A lot of Medical Council of India members have been accused of taking bribes to fast-track accreditation. There are also numerous allegations of corruption in granting different kinds of permission by the MCI to many medical colleges across our country.
The President 8 August, has approved the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act,2019. It provides a system that improves affordability and quality medical education and ensures the availability of adequate and rich quality medical professionals in all parts of the country. In place of Medical Council of India National Medical Council has to be established, for development and regulation of medical education, profession as well as institution
On the suspension of the Medical Council of India, the person appointed as MCI chairman and others appointed as the member, any officer, and other employees of the Council shall immediately leave their respective offices, As per the provision in the NMC Act. The Commission may have a chairperson, 22 part-time members, and 10 ex-officio members according to the new law.
